Summary

Plantainleaf dubautia is native to Hawaii and occurs as a frutescent shrub or tree up to 7 meters tall. It comprises three subspecies—humilis, magnifolia, and plantaginea—and is endemic to Hawaii, occurring on all six largest Hawaiian Islands. The plant produces panicles with many flower heads that are yellowish when young and become purple with age, and it inhabits moist to wet forest habitats receiving 75–700 cm of annual rainfall.

In cultivation or conservation planning, it naturally occupies moist to wet forest with substantial rainfall, while some subspecies are federally endangered. Conservation actions include ex situ seed storage (seed bank with more than 2,000 seeds) and propagation with outplanting, such as at McBryde Garden.
