Summary

An oak hybrid resulting from a cross between Q. ilex and Q. coccifera is a small shrub to 2–15 m tall with a spreading crown, evergreen leathery oblong-elliptic leaves about 1.5–2 cm long and 1.4–2 cm wide, dark green above and glaucous-tomentose beneath, with wavy margins and mucronate teeth; acorns are borne singly on short peduncles, with a cupule featuring long, pointed, non-appressed, slightly pubescent scales, and it occurs in warm, dry calcareous soils across Algeria, France, Greece, Italy, Morocco, Portugal, and Spain.

USDA Hardiness Zone 7–8; in cultivation it is rare, with a specimen at Borde Hill, England, originating from an acorn of Q. coccifera and a presumed hybrid status, reflecting its preference for warm, dry calcareous soils.
