Summary

Red Larkspur (Orange Larkspur, Canyon Delphinium) is a perennial herb native to California and Oregon. It grows about 1–2 ft tall with erect stems and basal, 3–10 lobed leaves; flowers are orange-red tubular blooms on long stalks with a straight spur 1/2–1 in long, produced in a few-flowered raceme and blooming in spring to early summer; hummingbirds are attracted to the blooms.

Cultivation favors sunny to partly shaded positions with dry, rocky, well-drained soil; avoid waterlogged conditions and protect from slugs and snails. Propagation is by seed (germination 1–3 months at 10–13°C; 1 month stratification may help) or by division of resting tubers. All parts are poisonous if ingested. Uses include rock gardens, borders, containers, and cut flowers, with nectar attracting hummingbirds.
