Summary
Native to California and Oregon, this perennial herb grows from a corm and has 3–4 glaucous, unkeeled leaves 30–85 cm long. A self-supporting scape about 20 cm tall bears a dense umbel of 6–15 pink to bluish purple flowers, with purple-streaked bracts and a white or pale-purple corona, flowering in spring (April–early June) in open woodlands, foothill grasslands, and scrubs from 0–2000 m.
Hardiness zones 6b–10b; sun to light shade; very low water needs, drought-tolerant once established, and dry in summer; tolerates a range of soils but prefers well-drained gritty soils; propagation from an established corm or from seed; uses include native planting, naturalizing, rock gardens, and cutting gardens; most effective when massed, and it attracts skipper butterflies.
