Summary
Columbian windflower, also called western white anemone, is a rhizomatous perennial herb native to forests along the west coast of the United States, typically 10–30 cm tall. It usually has a single basal leaf divided into three large, coarsely toothed leaflets up to 6 cm long, with additional leaves along a mostly bare stem. The inflorescence carries three leaflike bracts and a single white flower formed by five petal-like white sepals 1–2 cm long; petals are absent, and up to 120 whiskery stamens surround many pistils, with fruit comprising a cluster of spherical achenes.
In cultivation, it occurs in low to middle elevation forests (100–2000 m) and tolerates open to shaded woodland habitats; blooms April–July depending on elevation. Prefers a cold, shady site with humus-rich, moist soil; alpine house or shade may be used; propagation via seed in winter (barely covered), germination 3–6 months at 10–13°C, or division after flowering and in fall; garden-friendly and suitable as a lawn alternative or in landscaping.
